Typical Uses of Powder-Actuated Fasteners

for use with Cold Formed Steel

Powder actuated fasteners provide a quick and economical method for fastening cold-formed steel to concrete or steel base materials.

For more information, see Powder Actuated Fastening Systems.

PAF Shear Loads in Concrete and Steel
tension and shear loads for threaded rod anchors in concrete
  1. Load values based on 0.145" dia. pins in 2500 psi nm. wt. concrete or steel having a minimum Fy = 36 ksi
    (see ICC ER-2138).
  2. Edge distance of pins shall be no less than 3". Spacing distance of pins shall be no less than 4"
  3. The entire pointed portion of the fastener must penetrate the steel.
  4. Edge distance of pins shall be no less than 1/2". Spacing distance of pins shall be no less than 1 1/2".
  5. 2001 AISI NASPEC, Eq. E4.3.1-2, Ω = 3.0, d=0.145". See Conversion Charts for CFS thickness standards and General Notes (e) for CFS properties.
  6. Allowable loads must be the lesser of the base material or CFS strength.
PAF Tension Loads in Concrete and Steel
tension loads for threaded rod anchors in concrete foundation stemwall installation
  1. Load values based on 0.145" dia. pins in 2500 psi nm. wt. concrete or steel having a minimum Fy = 36 ksi
    (see ICC ESR-2138).
  2. Use interaction formula for combined tension/shear (Ps/Pt) + (Vs/Vt) ≤ 1.0.
  3. Edge distance of pins shall be no less than 3". Spacing distance of pins shall be no less than 4"
  4. The entire pointed portion of the fastener must penetrate the steel.
  5. Edge distance of pins shall be no less than 1/2". Spacing distance of pins shall be no less than 1 1/2".
  6. 2001 AISI NASPEC, Eq. E4.4.2-1 divided by 2.0 (one-sided loading), Ω = 3.0, dw = 0.3". See Conversion Charts for CFS thickness standards and General Notes (e) for CFS properties.
  7. Allowable loads must be the lesser of the base material or CFS strength.
